A brief history

2020: A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS

In early 2019, the Bournemouth Electric Camera Club learned that their regular venue in Broadway Lane [The Electric Club] was to have new external management, in an attempt to increase revenue and avoid the main Sports and Social Club having to close due to increasing losses.

Following discussions with the new management, it became clear that the increased hall hire charges and the lack of guaranteed availability on Wednesday evenings that they were planning to impose, meant that we would have to move.

The BECC committee worked quickly to find suitable alternative local premises that would suit our needs, be financially affordable, and give us guaranteed availability for our meetings - and as a result we relocated the club to The Hamworthy Club for the commencement of the 2019/20 season at the beginning of September 2019.

As we were now no longer operating out of The Electric Club premises, and no longer based in Bournemouth itself, it seemed logical, in late 2019, to review our club name in order to better reflect our new status!

Several options were considered before the recommendation of the club committee was put forward for reactions at a Special General Meeting of the membership on 18th December 2019. At this meeting there was unanimous agreement that the club should be renamed "bh photography club" with effect from 1st January 2020, recognising that our membership lives predominantly in bh postcodes, and to reflect our wide interest in all aspects of photography, not just cameras.

During the Coronavirus Pandemic the club kept going, using Zoom to maintain a full event calendar and seizing the opportunity to engage speakers and judges from further afield.  As we started to meet up in person again, we moved to the Muscliff Community Centre, not far from our original home.

The full story of our club therefore now has an unbroken history of over 110 years, covering Bournemouth Photographic Society, Bournemouth Electric Camera Club, and now bh photography club.  More of our earlier history is contained in the documents in the next column.

The technology used in photography may be constantly changing, but we can say that our club continues to move with the times, whilst retaining the long held reputation as a friendly, welcoming club for everyone interested in photography in all its guises.
